How to Access HBOT
through WSIB
Modern Medical is Thunder Bay’s physician-supervised hyperbaric oxygen clinic, supporting eligible workplace injury rehabilitation and recovery plans.
WSIB & HBOT
Injured at work? Your recovery matters.
A workplace accident can leave you dealing with injuries that are slow to heal. Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) is a physician-directed medical treatment that is approved for select indications, which may be covered under WSIB. HBOT may support the body’s healing processes and help you progress through a work-related injury recovery plan.
WSIB Covered HBOT Indications:
- Non-healing wounds
- Delayed radiation injury (soft tissue and bony necrosis)
- Idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss (ISSHL)
- Necrotizing soft tissue
- Osteomyelitis (refractory)
- Skin grafts and flaps (compromised)
- Thermal burns
- Air/Gas Embolism
- Carbon Monoxide poisoning and/or cyanide poisoning
- Clostridial myositis and myonecrosis (gas gangrene)
- Crush injury, compartment syndrome, and other acute traumatic ischemias
- Decompression sickness
- Exceptional blood loss
- Intracranial abscess
Coverage and authorization depend on your claim and medical referral. If you have a WSIB claim number, bring it to your appointment so our team can help coordinate documentation and next steps.

The Science
How HBOT Can Support Workplace Injury Healing
After a workplace injury, damaged tissues may struggle to get enough oxygen, especially when swelling, inflammation, or circulation issues are involved. HBOT increases oxygen delivery in the body under pressure, which may help support tissue repair and recovery.
In a recovery plan, HBOT may help by: supporting oxygenation of injured tissue, encouraging healthy blood vessel response, and assisting the body’s natural healing processes. A hyperbaric physician will determine whether HBOT is suitable for your condition and how it fits within your overall workplace injury rehabilitation plan.
Treatment plans are individualized. Many HBOT programs involve 2-hour daily sessions scheduled Monday through Friday, 5 days a week for up to 40–60 sessions, with ongoing clinical assessment and progress tracking.
Important: HBOT is not a one-size-fits-all solution. Eligibility, authorization, and expected outcomes vary based on diagnosis, timing, and overall health.

Beyond WSIB
Private Insurance & Workplace Benefits
HBOT may also be covered through private health insurance or employer-sponsored workplace benefits plans. Many extended health plans include provisions for physician-prescribed medical treatments.
Extended Health Plans
Many private insurance plans cover physician-prescribed HBOT. Check your plan’s “paramedical” or “medical services” section, or call your provider to ask about coverage for hyperbaric oxygen therapy.
Employer Workplace Benefits
If your employer provides a health spending account (HSA) or extended benefits, HBOT may qualify as an eligible medical expense. Ask your HR department or benefits administrator.
