Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy in Thunder Bay
For wounds that are slow to heal, Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy speeds healing.
What is a Non-Healing Wound?
A “non-healing” (chronic) wound is one that doesn’t progress through normal healing despite appropriate care within 4 weeks. Common reasons for delayed wound healing include; poor circulation, swelling, inflammation, infection, high-pressure areas, repeated trauma, and any underlying conditions that limit tissue blood flow. Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) is a medical therapy that increases tissue oxygenation to enhance the body’s natural repair processes.
Common Wound Types:
- Diabetic wounds and foot ulcers
- Venous and arterial ulcers
- Post-surgical wounds that are slow to heal
- Traumatic wounds
- Compromised skin grafts or skin flaps
- Pressure injuries (bed sores)
- Wounds with swelling/circulation issues
- Recurrent wounds
- Peri-anal fistulas
- Burns
- Radiation injuries
HBOT is an OHIP Covered Service
Non-healing wounds are an OHIP-approved indication for HBOT, when accompanied by a physician or nurse practitioner referral. Healthcare providers can send referrals directly to Modern Medical.
Adjunct Care
HBOT is delivered alongside a comprehensive wound care plan that includes appropriate dressings with regular changes, offloading/pressure relief, infection control, and optimization of circulation and underlying health factors.
Physician-Supervised
HBOT Physicians are always on-site to oversee treatment delivery and ensure safe outcomes. HBOT sessions are administered by our team of highly trained Hyperbaric Chamber Operators.
Modern Facility
HBOT sessions take place in our new 7000 ft² clinic in Thunder Bay, designed for comfort, accessibility, safety, and consistent care throughout your course of treatment.
How HBOT Heals Chronic Wounds
Wounds fail to heal and become chronic because tissues aren’t getting enough oxygen to support repair. HBOT increases oxygen availability at the wound site, which promotes advanced healing, formation of new blood vessels, controls inflammation, and stimulates stem cell mobilization.
What to expect
Treatment plans are individualized. Many wound-healing protocols involve a series of HBOT sessions with ongoing clinical assessment and progress review. The Hyperbaric Physician will outline a treatment plan individualized to your healing needs.
