Osteomyelitis (Refractory)
OHIP-covered HBOT for chronic, refractory bone infections that have not responded to standard antibiotic treatment.
Osteomyelitis (Refractory)
Understanding Osteomyelitis (Refractory)
Osteomyelitis is a serious bone infection, often caused by Staphylococcus aureus. Refractory osteomyelitis is persistent infection despite appropriate antibiotic therapy and surgery. HBOT is an OHIP-covered adjunct that enhances the effectiveness of antibiotics and the body’s immune response in infected bone tissue.
Signs & Symptoms:
- Persistent bone pain, often deep and aching
- Localized warmth, redness, and swelling over affected bone
- Fever and systemic infection signs
- Sinus tracts or draining wounds over the infected area
- History of bone fracture, surgery, or implant
- Failure to respond to prolonged antibiotic therapy
Why Modern Medical
Your Osteomyelitis (Refractory) Treatment Team
Antimicrobial Action
HBOT creates a high-oxygen environment directly toxic to anaerobic bacteria, enhancing your immune system’s ability to fight infection.
Adjunct to Surgery
HBOT works alongside surgical debridement and antibiotics, improving outcomes by promoting healing at tissue margins and enhancing antibiotic efficacy.
Physician-Supervised
A hyperbaric-trained physician is always on site during treatment sessions, ensuring your safety and monitoring your clinical progress.
The Science
How HBOT Treats Osteomyelitis (Refractory)
Infected bone is severely hypoxic. HBOT restores oxygen tension in bone tissue, directly enhancing the bacteria-killing ability of neutrophils. It also potentiates certain antibiotics and stimulates new bone formation. Courses of 40–60 treatments are typical.
Osteomyelitis (Refractory) is one of 14 OHIP-approved indications for Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy. Treatment at Modern Medical is fully covered — no upfront costs to patients with a physician referral.
