Exceptional Blood Loss (Anemia)
Understanding Exceptional Blood Loss (Anemia)
Exceptional blood loss anemia occurs when hemoglobin drops to critical levels that cannot sustain life. HBOT is an OHIP-covered bridge therapy for patients with severe anemia — particularly those who refuse blood transfusion for religious reasons or for whom transfusion carries unacceptable risk.
Signs & Symptoms:
- Hemoglobin level critically low (often <5 g/dL)
- Extreme fatigue and weakness
- Shortness of breath at rest
- Tachycardia, hemodynamic instability
- Altered mental status
- Context: surgery, trauma, GI bleeding, postpartum hemorrhage

The Science
How HBOT Treats Exceptional Blood Loss (Anemia)
At 3 atmospheres of pressure, HBOT dissolves enough oxygen directly in plasma to sustain life without hemoglobin-bound oxygen. This buys critical time for the patient’s bone marrow to produce new red blood cells, or for the underlying cause of blood loss to be addressed.
Exceptional Blood Loss (Anemia) is one of 14 OHIP-approved indications for Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy. Treatment at Modern Medical is fully covered — no upfront costs to patients with a physician referral.
