Carbon Monoxide Poisoning

Urgent HBOT for CO and cyanide poisoning — the fastest way to clear carboxyhemoglobin and prevent delayed neurological injury.

Understanding Carbon Monoxide Poisoning

CO is a colourless, odourless gas produced by combustion. CO poisoning occurs when CO displaces oxygen on hemoglobin, forming carboxyhemoglobin (COHb) which cannot carry oxygen. Even after exposure ends, CO bound to mitochondria can cause delayed neurological injury. HBOT is the treatment of choice for moderate-to-severe CO poisoning.

Time-Critical Care

This condition requires urgent intervention. Modern Medical coordinates rapid HBOT access for emergency referrals from across Northwestern Ontario.

Physician-Supervised

A hyperbaric-trained physician is always on site during treatment sessions, ensuring your safety and monitoring your clinical progress.

State-of-the-Art Facility

Treatments are delivered in our new 7,000 ft² facility with Perry Sigma monoplace chambers, big-screen entertainment, and a dedicated sound system.

How HBOT Treats Carbon Monoxide Poisoning

Breathing 100% oxygen at pressure reduces the half-life of carboxyhemoglobin from ~5 hours (room air) to ~20 minutes — dramatically accelerating CO elimination. HBOT also displaces CO from mitochondria, preventing the delayed neuropsychological syndrome seen in up to 30% of moderate CO poisoning patients.

OHIP Covered

Carbon Monoxide Poisoning is one of 14 OHIP-approved indications for Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy. Treatment at Modern Medical is fully covered — no upfront costs to patients with a physician referral.
