Air and Gas Embolism
Emergency HBOT for arterial gas embolism — a life-threatening event requiring immediate recompression therapy.
Air and Gas Embolism
Understanding Air and Gas Embolism
Arterial gas embolism (AGE) occurs when gas bubbles enter the arterial circulation, blocking blood flow to critical organs — most commonly the brain and heart. This is a medical emergency requiring immediate recompression therapy.
Signs & Symptoms:
- Sudden loss of consciousness during or after diving ascent
- Stroke-like symptoms: unilateral weakness, slurred speech
- Seizures
- Cardiac arrest
- Visual disturbances
- Confusion or altered mental status

The Science
How HBOT Treats Air and Gas Embolism
Recompression physically reduces bubble size, restoring blood flow. Breathing 100% oxygen accelerates bubble reabsorption and corrects tissue hypoxia. Treatment should begin as rapidly as possible — outcomes are directly correlated with time to recompression.
Air and Gas Embolism is one of 14 OHIP-approved indications for Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy. Treatment at Modern Medical is fully covered — no upfront costs to patients with a physician referral.
