Check Your Extended Health Benefits

Many Canadians have extended health benefits through their employer or a private plan that may cover physician-prescribed HBOT. Coverage varies by provider and plan, so it’s worth checking.

1

Check Your Plan

Look for “hyperbaric oxygen therapy,” “paramedical services,” or “physician-prescribed treatments” in your benefits booklet or online portal. If you’re unsure, call your insurance provider directly.

2

Get a Referral

Ask your physician to provide a referral letter indicating the medical necessity of HBOT for your condition. This is typically required for insurance pre-authorization.

3

Contact Us

Call Modern Medical at (807) 235-0071. Our team can provide treatment plans, cost estimates, and any documentation your insurer requests to process your claim.

4

Start Treatment

Once coverage is confirmed, we’ll schedule your sessions. If your plan requires pre-authorization, we’ll help coordinate with your provider before you begin.

What to Ask Your Insurance Provider

When you call your insurance company, here are the key questions to ask about HBOT coverage.

Ask specifically about “hyperbaric oxygen therapy” — some plans list it under medical treatments, others under paramedical services. If the agent isn’t sure, ask them to check with the medical review team.
Many plans require prior approval. Ask what documentation they need — typically a physician referral letter and a treatment plan. Modern Medical can provide both.
Some plans have a dollar limit per year for paramedical or prescribed treatments. Knowing your limit helps you plan your treatment course.
Ask whether coverage is per session, per condition, or per calendar year. HBOT courses typically involve 30–40 sessions, so understanding the structure matters.
If your employer provides an HSA, HBOT is generally an eligible medical expense under CRA guidelines when prescribed by a physician. Confirm with your plan administrator.
Ask for a specific list — we can provide referral letters, treatment plans, progress reports, itemized invoices, and any other documentation your insurer requires.

Injured at Work? WSIB May Cover Your Treatment

If your injury occurred at work, your HBOT treatment may be eligible for coverage through the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB). Modern Medical has experience working with WSIB claims and can help coordinate the documentation process.

All 14 OHIP-approved indications are also eligible for WSIB coverage when the injury is work-related. Visit our dedicated WSIB page for full details on eligibility, the approval process, and how we can help.
