What Is
Hyperbaric
Oxygen
Therapy?

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) is a medical treatment that involves breathing 100% oxygen in a specially designed chamber with higher-than-normal atmospheric pressure. By increasing the pressure to 2–3 times that of normal air, HBOT allows the lungs to absorb significantly more oxygen. This elevated oxygen level in the bloodstream stimulates the body’s natural healing processes in areas where oxygen delivery may otherwise be compromised in both healthy people and those with medical conditions.

Hyperbaric
Oxygen Therapy
Is covered by OHIP

  • Air/Gas Embolism
  • Carbon Monoxide poisoning and/or cyanide poisoning
  • Clostridial myositis and myonecrosis (gas gangrene)
  • Crush injury, compartment syndrome, and other acute traumatic ischemias
  • Decompression sickness
  • Non-healing wounds
  • Exceptional blood loss
  • Intracranial abscess
  • Necrotizing soft tissue
  • Osteomyelitis (refractory)
  • Delayed radiation injury (soft tissue and bony necrosis)
  • Skin grafts and flaps (compromised)
  • Thermal burns
  • Idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss (ISSHL)

In Ontario, hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) is covered by OHIP (Ontario Health Insurance Plan), but only for specific medical conditions approved by the Ministry of Health. These include things like carbon monoxide poisoning, chronic bone infections, wounds that aren’t healing properly (especially in people with diabetes), and certain types of tissue damage from radiation.

Frequently
Asked
Questions

A typical treatment lasts about 2 hours, but can vary. This is dependent on a variety of factors including patient’s ability to equalize their ears, and comfort inside the chamber.

Each patient’s experience may vary. However, the typical process is as follows;

  • Referral is sent by patient’s physician, specialist or family doctor
  • Patient is scheduled with a Hyperbaric Physician for a consultation.
  • A history and physical exam and any other appropriate investigations will be completed to determine suitability for treatment
  • If approved for treatment, the hyperbaric physician will discuss in detail the patient’s treatment plan, potential side-effects, risks and benefits of treatment, and any contraindications.

The number and frequency of treatments will vary depending on the condition being treated. This will be discussed with you during your consultation.

However, for many conditions, one treatment lasting two hours per day for 5 to 6 days a week, for a total of 30 to 40 treatments is common.

The total course of treatment can last anywhere from 4 to 8 weeks.

As indicated above, there are currently 14 indications completely covered by the Ontario Health Insurance Plan. The list of approved indications is;

  • Air/Gas Embolism
  • Carbon Monoxide poisoning and/or cyanide poisoning
  • Clostridial myositis and myonecrosis (gas gangrene)
  • Crush injury, compartment syndrome, and other acute traumatic ischemias
  • Decompression sickness
  • Non-healing wounds
  • Exceptional blood loss
  • Intracranial abscess
  • Necrotizing soft tissue
  • Osteomyelitis (refractory)
  • Delayed radiation injury (soft tissue and bony necrosis)
  • Skin grafts and flaps (compromised)
  • Thermal burns
  • Idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss (ISSHL)

It is very important for patients to follow directions provided by the hyperbaric staff regarding the appropriate clothing and prohibited items in the chamber.

A screening questionnaire will be provided prior to your treatments, that will help remind you of the do’s-and-dont’s in a hyperbaric chamber.

DO’S:

  • Arrive at least 30 minutes before your scheduled treatment time.
  • Leave jewellery and valuables at home if possible.
  • Update your hyperbaric team of any changes in your health before entering the chamber.
  • Notify hyperbaric team if you have any new bandages or medical appliances since your last treatment.
  • Eat a meal before arriving to your appointment.
  • Avoid coffee and any diuretics before your appointment.
  • Use the washroom before entering the chamber.
  • Wear loose-fitting clothing that you can easily change in and out of.

DON’TS:

  • Do not smoke prior to or immediately after your treatment.
  • Don’t wear makeup, skin-care products or hair products.
  • Do not wear jewellery inside the chamber.
  • Don’t ignore any discomfort, clearly communicate to your technician if you feel anxious.
  • Do not bring a cellphone or any electronics into the chamber.
  • Don’t skip treatments if possible.

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy is more effective when delivered daily, in sequence as directed by the hyperbaric physician. However, we do understand that you may need to reschedule for various reasons. Please provide 48 hours advance notice of any rescheduled appointments so we can help ensure efficacy.

Repeat no-shows may result in cancellation of future treatments and fees in accordance to our cancellation policy.

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy can drop a patient’s blood sugar. Therefore, all diabetics are encouraged to closely monitor their blood sugar, eat a meal prior to their hyperbaric treatment, discuss with their referring physician and the hyperbaric physician whether modification to medications is required, and notify the hyperbaric team if they experience any symptoms of hypoglycemia during treatment.

All patients that have been approved for hyperbaric oxygen therapy will be provided with 100% cotton scrubs to be changed into before entering the chamber. Scrubs will be kept at the clinic and provided to you before every treatment.

If possible, leave all valuables at home as you will be unable to take them into the chamber with you. We have storage facilities on site, but security is not guaranteed while you are in a treatment.

During the beginning and end of your treatment, you will feel a pressure change inside the chamber. This will be reminiscent of the ascent and descent inside an airplane. Once at pressure, patients may nap, watch TV, or relax in any way they choose.
